William Mainwaring was born in 1735, and was the eldest son of architect Boulton Mainwaring of Isleworth, Middlesex. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, and then entered Lincolns' Inn in 1754 to be called to the bar in 1759. He was elected to serve as MP for Middlesex from 1784 to 1800. His son, George Boulton Mainwaring, also served as MP for Middlesex from 1806.
