Footnotes

Provenance
Private collection, Scotland
With Philip Mould, London, 2003, where purchased by the present owner

The present work follows the popular composition by Morier of the Duke of Cumberland of which numerous versions were made - see for example the portrait in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405261).

The Swiss-born David Morier began working for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland in 1747 and went on to become limner to the Duke in 1752. Famous for his command of the victorious government troops against the Jacobite forces at Culloden in 1746, the Duke was painted a great many times by Morier in various military guises.
