Provenance
The Collection of Marshall Ney (according to a label on the reverse)
Sale, Christie's, New York, 22 March 1983, lot 57, where acquired by the present owner
A likely identification for the sitter, particularly given the portrait's suggested provenance from the collection of Marshall Ney, is Count Francis de Beaufort (1661-1714) who was an English-born Dutch mercenary who became court chancellor to the Prince of Lippe-Detmold. He was of Huguenot descent and his family had been forced to flee France in 1685 for the United Provinces; he married Louise Mary Brazy.
