The property of a deceased's estate
A student of the Swiss painter Franz Kaisermann, Thomas Dessoulavy painted Rome and its surroundings as well as other regions of Italy, including Naples. He exhibited five Italian views at the Royal Academy, London between 1829 and 1848, sent from addresses in Rome. His 1838 exhibit (no. 267) was titled 'Naples'. He worked in Rome as a landscape painter all his adult life, and was often asked to guide visitors through the city.
Dessoulavy's tombstone at the Cimitero Cattolico di Roma (The Protestant Cemetery in Rome) reads -
BENEATH/THESE FLOWERS/ARE THE REMAINS OF/THOMAS DESSOULAVY/AN ENGLISH LANDSCAPE PAINTER/WHO DURING 53 YEARS/PAINTED THE CLASSIC SCENES OF ROME/WITH TRUTH AND BEAUTY/AND NEVER CEASED TO BE AN ENGLISHMAN/HE WAS 68 YEARS OF AGE AND DIED/
ON THE 28TH OCTOBER 1869
