In Beechey's obituary, written in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1839, the present work is described as 'one of the best of Sir William's works' and that 'Sir William often spoke of it as his favourite picture'. According to Roberts, an unfinished portrait of the children's father, Edward Beeston Long, was offered in the William Beechey sale at Christie's on 11 June 1836, lot 65.
