E. Peters Bowron, Pompeo Batoni. A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings, New Haven, 2016, vol. II, p. 653 (under Wrongly Attributed Works)

The figures in the present An Italianate landscape with Bacchus and Ariadne loosely follow those in van Lint's larger version of the same subject (see A. Busiri Vici, Peter, Hendrik e Giacomo van Lint. Tre pittori di Anversa del '600 e '700 lavorano a Roma, Rome, 1987, p. 233, cat. no. 277, ill. p.232). For the figure group in both the larger and the smaller present works, van Lint has taken as his inspiration Guido Reni's Bacchus and Ariadne, commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Barberini in 1637 for Queen Henrietta Maria of England which was later destroyed as it was considered morally questionable. The composition, however, was recorded in prints, such as that by Bolognini after Reni's paintings (see fig. 1).

At the time of the 1974 sale at Sotheby's Parke Bernet, Clarke believed the figures in the present works to be by Pompeo Batoni (1708 - 1787) but had reversed his opinion by the time the monograph on the artist was published in 1985.
