In the present owner's family for approximately 30 years
Various versions of this composition are known although its origin remains unclear. The present lot was acquired by the present owner's father as Theodor Smits (acive 1657-circa 1671) approximately 30 years ago. It is of the same composition as a work, for example, as the still life in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (cat. no. P001504), which is given to Jacob Foppens van Es (Antwerp 1596-1666). A further work, with the signature of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, was offered at Lepke, 17 April, 1928, lot 70. This latter painting followed the same composition but with some additional elements such as cherries, a slice of lemon and a prawn.
