F. Cockett, Early sea painters: 1660-1730: the group who worked in England under the shadow of the Van de Veldes, Woodbridge, 1995, pp.40-1, 48, cat. no. 1, ill, pl. 11

Cockett suggests that the present work is a typical composition of Knyff's earlier pictures, before he came to England in 1672/3, and the pink clouds are particularly characteristic of his style at this time' (see Cockett, ibid, p. 41).
