Provenance: Kuizenga collection, The Netherlands, acquired on 20 August 2008
Artefacts such as the present lot, created by nomadic tribes during the first millennium BC, often adorned chariots and personal items, with pole caps or finials serving both decorative and functional roles. See a related pole cap with antelope, 6th/4th century BC, in The Art Institute Chicago (acc.no.1937.328). Another related pair of ibex, 6th/4th century BC, is in the same collection (acc.no.1937.326). A more ornate pair of fittings with deer atop rectangular sockets, 5th century BC, is also illustrated by J.Rawson and E.Bunker, Ancient Chinese and Ordos Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1990, pp.352, no.230.
