Provenance
The artist.
By descent to the artist's step-daughter, Marjorie.
Thence by descent to the present owner, private collection, UK.
A pupil of G. F. Watts, Spencer Stanhope developed a distinctive Pre-Raphaelite style. A regular exhibitor at the London academies from 1859, he drew on mythology and allegory for his subject matter. He often worked as a fresco painter, decorating the Anglican Church in Florence and Marlborough School Chapel, as well as contributing towards the Oxford Union murals. He moved to Florence in 1880, remaining there for the rest of his life.
The present lot is after a Florentine school painting in egg tempera on wood, probably painted between 1450 and 1500, currently held in the collection of the National Gallery London (NG1199).
