Provenance
Anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 11 February 1997, lot 34.
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, New York, 22 May 2018, lot 43.
Property of a gentleman (acquired at the above sale).
Munier exhibited a larger version (78.5 X 40 inches) of this composition at the Paris Salon in 1882 with the title La Source. Having joined William Adolphe Bouguereau's studio in 1872 he became one of the master's finest students and was a regular exhibitor at the Salon by the 1880s. La baigneuse is evidence of Munier's skill in painting in the French Academic tradition and of Bouguereau's influence on him.
This work is published in the Émile Munier online catalogue raisonné under no. ND.08.
