Provenance
The property of Mrs G. Harwood, acquired in 1972.
The 1911 Grand National took place on 24th March 1911, but torrential rain caused numerous riders to fall and only four of the twenty six runners managed to finish. The victor by twenty lengths was 20:1 outsider Glenside owned by Mr F. Bibby, ridden by John Randolph 'Jack' Anthony (21 January 1890 – 10 July 1954), who was a Welsh National Hunt jockey. Jack was the sixth son from a horse racing family who owned the Cilfeithy Stud Farm in Llandyfaelog, Carmarthenshire. Glenside was described as 'a broken winded one eyed horse'.
An amateur until 1921, Jack won the National three times: on 'Glenside' in 1911, on 'Ally Sloper' in 1915, and on 'Troytown' in 1920. He was the sixth jockey to win three Grand Nationals, and he also finished third in the race in 1925. He was also champion jockey in 1914 and 1928, retiring that year to become a successful trainer.
