Edwin Harris first visited Brittany in 1881, accompanied by fellow Birmingham artist William Breakspeare, the two men joining the art colony at Dinan. In the spring of 1882, sponsored by his dealer Edwin Chamberlain, Harris returned to Pont Aven, a small village that, as the journal Edgbastonia noted, 'simply swarmed' with artists. It further noted that 'the costume of the natives ... is probably the most picturesque in the whole of Finnistere.'1
