Little information is available on the life and relatively brief artistic career of Argentinian born Severo Rodriguez Etchart. He received formal artistic training firstly in Buenos Aires before travelling to Turin where he studied at the Albertina Academy. His artistic talent then took him to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian under Tony Robert-Fleury and the celebrated French master William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He was an exhibitor at the Paris Salon, and collection of his work can be found in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. The present lot depicts a young girl seated in a relaxed, thoughtful pose. She is elegantly dressed, her outfit complimented with touches of gold in the form of a small gold chain and jewellery. The rich yet subtle reds, browns and blues of her clothing give the impression of warmth and comfort, yet also not inconsiderable wealth. While the background is deliberately unstated, closer inspection of the gold wall reveals a more intricate pattern, and hints of a rich gold interior are left by the artist. It has been suggested that the sitter for this portrait may be the artist's daughter.
