Anton Kozakiewicz studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1866. His studies were interrupted as a result of his capture and incarceration by Russian troops in 1863 having participated in the January Uprising. Following his release, he studied in Vienna before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1871. The success he enjoyed in Munich persuaded him to remain in Bavaria for almost thirty years exhibiting landscapes, and works depicting the lives of Polish peasants, Jews and Gypsies. He also produced illustrations for children's stories as well as portraits. In 1900 he returned to Warsaw but failed to enjoy the same success and ended his life in relative obscurity.
