Dans une forme de rêverie primitive, sous la véhémence radieuse des mouvements de sa main, les peintures d'Etel Adnan sont un voyage introspectif où les formes, presque sculptées, sont le reflet d'un art vécu.
Son pouvoir ontologique de la couleur (son jaune est un or alchimique ou un miel solaire) chante la joie et les malheurs de l'homme, tout en réveillant notre cœur. Dans le secret de son atelier parisien ou breton, sous son pinceau magmatique, les cercles, les carrés et les lignes, d'une pureté infinie, nous sont autant de pérégrinations.
Véritable joyau de la peinture contemporaine, Etel Adnan fut découverte tardivement (Documenta 13 de Kassel en 2012), permettant une telle maturation de conserver intact son pouvoir d'émerveillement. Elle est invitée à la biennale du Whitney Museum à New York en 2014, puis, c'est au tour du célèbre critique d'art Hans Ulrich Obrist de lui consacrer une rétrospective au Mathaf, musée d'art moderne du Qatar. Les plus grandes institutions mondiales lui réservent depuis dix ans l'ampleur qu'elle mérite, en lui dédiant des expositions d'envergure, tandis que ses œuvres figurent de façon permanente au MoMA de New York, au M+ de Hong Kong, au Centre Pompidou à Paris, au British Museum à Londres, au National Museum for Women in the Arts à Washington etc.
Peintre et poète de la lumière, venant du pays du lait et du miel, Etel Adnan retint toute sa vie la leçon de Bachelard dont elle fit la connaissance à la Sorbonne : « Nous pouvons dire d'une peinture ce que je pense d'un poème (...). Comme la parole, les lignes et les couleurs peuvent être des prophéties et prendre l'allure d'un psychisme précurseur qui projette l'être ». Entre onirisme et nomadisme (ses petits formats lui viennent d'un accident de la vie), ses tableaux possèdent une écriture intérieure. Ses leporellos enluminés (cahiers japonais en accordéons), dont le premier lui fut offert par Rick Borton, artiste de la Beat Generation, sont une véritable révélation, lui permettant une conversation étincelante et entrelacée entre mot et couleur.
Parcelle de beauté à l'état pur, Planète 4, créée en 2019, offre, à l'image des œuvres de Paul Klee, qui l'inspira tant par son abstraction poétiquement géométrique, un tableau à l'intérieur de la toile. L'astre dépeint est une fenêtre qui porte en elle l'exil et la promesse de l'infini. Dans un équilibre ductile, cette planète à l'incandescence fiévreuse n'est pas sans évoquer la conquête spatiale (la maison d'édition de sa compagne, Simone Fattale, the Post-Apollo Press défend ses écrits, de même que l'avant-garde littéraire). Etel Adnan, qui a aujourd'hui rejoint les astronautes, les étoile et les anges est plus qu'une artiste, c'est un inducteur de rêves.

In a form of primitive reverie, under the radiant vehemence of the movements of her hand, Etel Adnan's paintings become an introspective journey, indeed her seemingly sculpted shapes are the result of her truly experiencing art.
Her ontological power of colours (her yellow is an alchemical gold or a solar honey) sings of the joys and misfortunes of mankind, while awakening our hearts. In the secrecy of her Parisian or Breton studio, under her magmatic touch, circles, squares and lines of infinite purity draw us into a series of wanderings.
An actual jewel of contemporary painting, Etel Adnan was discovered late in life (Documenta 13 in Kassel in 2012), allowing her to mature and retain her power to amaze. Invited to the Whitney Museum Biennial in New York in 2014, she was then honoured with a retrospective at Mathaf, the museum of modern art in Qatar, curated by renowned art critic Hans Ulrich Obrist. For the past ten years, the world's greatest institutions have given her the recognition she deserves, dedicating major exhibitions to her, while her works are on permanent display at the MoMA in New York, the M+ in Hong Kong, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the British Museum in London, the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, among others.
A painter and poet of light from the land of milk and honey, Etel Adnan retained throughout her life the lesson she learned from Bachelard, whom she met at the Sorbonne: 'We can say of a painting what I think of a poem (...). Like words, lines and colours can be prophecies resembling a vanguard psyche that drives the soul.' At once dreamlike and nomadic (her small formats were due to an accident), her paintings contain an intimate language. Her illuminated leporellos (Japanese accordion-folded notebooks), the first of which was given to her by Beat Generation artist Rick Borton, are a true revelation, allowing her to engage in a scintillating conversation weaving words and colours.
A slice of pure beauty, Planète 4, created in 2019, offers —like the works of Paul Klee, who inspired her so much with his poetic geometric abstraction— a painting within a painting. The celestial body depicted is a window framing both exile and a promise of infinity. In a tensile balance, this feverishly incandescent planet is reminiscent of the space conquest (the publishing house of her partner, Simone Fattale, Post-Apollo Press, supported her writings, as well as those of the literary avant-garde). Etel Adnan, who has now joined the astronauts, the stars and the angels, is more than an artist: she is an instigator of dreams.
