A good late 17th century English ebony veneered hour striking basket top bracket clock

Nathaniel Hodges, London

The case surmounted by a double 'S'-scroll handle above a basket top finely decorated with cherubs, flowing scrolls and foliate motifs, all backed in modern red silk and framed by four later pineapple finials, over a moulded top. The front applied with cast brass cherub mounts, the sides with repoussé sound frets backed in red silk and rectangular glazed observation windows, the rear with a large glazed observation panel, all terminating in a moulded base and raised on later bun feet. The 6.5 inch brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the hours divided by fancy cruciform half-hour markers, the finely matted centre with scrolling detail, mock pendulum aperture, ringed winding squares and calendar aperture, signed to the lower edge of the chapter ring Nathaniel Hodges, London, with blued steel hands and winged cherub spandrels. The five pillar movement converted from verge to anchor escapement with later pendulum and backcock, powered by twin gut fusees and protected by finely finished tulip-form stop pieces, striking the hours via rack and snail on a bell mounted above. The backplate profusely engraved with scrolling foliage and signed within a central cartouche Nathaniel Hodges Londini fecit, the upper left corner with evidence of infilled holes where a pull quarter repeat was formerly mounted. The clock is currently ticking and striking. 39cm (15.5ins) high.

Footnotes

Nathaniel Hodges was made Free of the Clockmakers Company 324 years ago, in December 1681. In 1687 he was in arrears with his quarterage and he was not heard of within the Company thereafter. Dawson, Drover and Parkes in Early English Clocks, Antiques Collectors Club, 1982, show two clocks by him dated to circa 1690-95 (plates 675- 678); both are in elaborate repousse-brass mounted cases and indeed one still retains the original carrying case.
