Biancalana, Alessandro, Porcellane Ginori a Doccia. La stanza delle meraviglie di casa Colli, 2023, p. 197, cat. 16.
This furniture mount, or pillar, was likely used to support a more complex structure. John Mallett has proposed that these mounts, of which the V&A has an identical model, were intended to ornament the ebony bases that supported the large-scale Doccia porcelain statues (inv. 5424A-1859).
A letter from Carlo Ginori to Gaspero Bruschi, dated 30 May, 1747 confirms the receipt of "il pilastrino col putto [the small pillar with putto]" in time for "Squarcione (the nickname of Francesco Lici) lo forma e subito gli farò fare [Francesco Lici to shape it right away]" )AGL Firenze, XII, 3, f.13, Ginori Sen. Carlo. Lettere diverse dirette al medesimo. 1747-1748, c. 86).
Other examples exist in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 1994.324.1), Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (inv. C.3221-1928) and the Castello Sforzesco, Milan (inv. P81-84).
