Footnotes

Literature
Biancalana, Alessandro, Porcellane Ginori a Doccia. La stanza delle meraviglie di casa Colli, 2023, pp. 176-178, cat. 9.

Likely made by the chief modeller of the Doccia factory, Gaspero Bruschi, the figure of the Doctor, or "Dottore" from the Italian Comedy, was a caricature of a learned yet foolish man from Bologna, the historic heart of university learning in Italy. According to Andreina d'Agliano, Bruschi based his model on the engraving "Il Dottor Scatalon Bolognese" by Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) (see the chapter on Doccia porcelain in Jansen, Reinhard (ed.), Commedia dell'arte : Fest der Komödianten : Keramische Kostbarkeiten den Museen der Welt, 2001).

A smaller, painted version of the Doctor is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. C.177-1931).
