Literature
Biancalana, Alessandro, Porcellane Ginori a Doccia. La stanza delle meraviglie di casa Colli, 2023, pp. 352-354, cat. 77

This rare flared beaker, of which there are thought to be only four other known examples with similar decoration and shape, is decorated with a battle scene on either side after engravings by Georg Conrad Bodenher (1673-1719) from the series Reiter und Gefechte ("Knights and Battles"), taken from drawings by Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder (1666-1742). A folio presenting the series exists in the State Art Collections at Dresden (SKD), inv. A 11023. Biancalana (op.cit., p. 352) attributes the decoration on the cup to the hand of Carl Wendelin Anreiter (1702-1747), on account of the beaker's similarities in subject and execution to wares made at Meissen and Du Paquier and its date, which coincides with Anreiter's tenure at Doccia (beginning in 1737) following his stint at the Du Paquier factory in Vienna. Three other beakers from the series are illustrated in J. Kräftner (ed.), Baroque Luxury Porcelain, 2005, nos. 209 and 210, where it is noted (p. 360) that the series must have been destined, possibly even the Holy Roman Emperor and Grad Duke of Tuscany, Franz Stephan.
