Très grande et rare aiguière à panse hexaédrique sur piédouche, en faïence de Nevers, XVIIe siècle

A very large and rare polyhedral footed Nevers ewer, 17th century

Modelled with a high spout and conjoined handle with rope terminals, the body formed out of a tridecahedral shape consisting of hexagonal and square panels decorated with figures and Chinese landscapes in cobalt blue, the decoration continuing through the foot, 40cm high, "3" in underglaze-blue to base, (restoration to three panels)

Footnotes

The unusual faceted shape of the ewer, combined with the underglaze-blue decoration on each hexagonal panel depicting scholars in a landscape surrounded by rocks and distinctly Asian flora, point to Far Eastern inspiration. Faceted Chinese porcelain ewers were produced at Jingdezhen during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, so it is likely they made their way into Europe via the Netherlands at this time.

Another very similar example is at the Musée national de céramique, Sèvres (inv. MNC 25661 CL1890), illustrated in Jean Rosen, La faïence de Nevers, 2009, vol. 2, p. 352, fig. 628.
