Provenance
Sold at Tajan Paris, 29 November 2016, lot 33.

Exhibited
IV siècles de faïences françaises, Maison de la Culture de Nevers, 27 March-23 August, 1987, no. 46

The unusual scrolled borders and intricate blue floral berettino ground of the gentleman's jacket make this a rare Nevers wall sconce. For an equally finely painted example with a more typical moulded border, see the example in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. OA 1274).
