Scheurich modelled this group in 1919 at a time when he was inspired by Richard Strauss's opera, 'Der Rosenkavalier', which he also depicted in countless sketches and drawings depicting scenes, characters and costumes. The figures of this group can be found in lithographs by Scheurich depicting 'Der Rosenkavalier' published in 1920.
Scheurich delivered the model for this group to the Meissen manufactory in August 1919, and it was purchased at the end of the month for RM 2,500. In early 1920, Scheurich designed three different colour schemes for the group, all of which were produced (the design with a predominantly coral-red colouring was the most frequently used, as in the present lot). The model, which was only sold as a coloured version, proved to be very popular and 227 examples had been sold.
A unique and signed example was in the collection of J. Rafael, sold in these rooms, 14 April 2022, lot 27, and another example was sold in these rooms, 3 December 2024, lot 203.
