A Meissen figure of a beggar musician, circa 1740-45


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, seated on a grassy mound playing the hurdy-gurdy, wearing a black hat, ragged, pale-purple jacket with a satchel slung over his back, a white shirt and breeches, 14cm high, faint crossed swords mark in blue, impressed 33 (twice) (left shoe restored)

Footnotes

Kaendler's Taxa of 1740-44 includes: "1. alten Mann mit der Leyer auff einem Rasen sizend, einen Ranzen auf dem Rücken habend, und in Maule eine Tabaccs-Pfeife" [an old man with a hurdy-gurdy seated on grass, having a satchel on the back and a tobacco pipe in his mouth].
