A Meissen group of "La Toilette du Matin", circa 1760


The lady and child standing by a dressing table with white drapery hanging from a mirror, a candlestick, a comb, boxes and and etui and scissors on a tray, all on a purple tablecloth with paler hangings, the lady wearing a bonnet, turquoise cape, puce dress over an underskirt decorated with indianische Blumen and yellow shoes, the child with a recumbent pug dog at her feet, wearing a yellow dress with a white cape decorated with red flowers and holding a fur-lined hand-warmer, the base moulded with gilt-edged scrollwork and applied with leaves and flowers, 19cm high; 22cm across, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue (some restoration)

Based on the engraving by Jacques-Phillipe Le Bas published in 1741, after the painting by Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin now in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. Another example of this group is in the Pauls-Eisenbeiss Collection, Historisches Museum, Basel (Margret Ribbert, "Seit drei Jahrzehnten im Haus zum Kirschgarten - Geschichte und Entwicklung der Porzellansammlung der Pauls-Eisenbeiss-Stiftung in Basel", Keramos 198 (2008): 72, ill. 12).
