A Meissen figure of the Quack Doctor from the "Cryes of London" series, circa 1755-60


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, standing over an open chest of coloured bottles with a monkey wearing a turquoise tunic seated on the edge and holding a ribbon attached to his belt, an open book and a tray with different coloured compartments and a knife on the base beside them, holding a flask in his left hand, wearing a black hat, white ruff collar, yellow-lined purple cape, gilt-edged purple costume with a sword to his left and another flask in a pocket on his right thigh, the base moulded with gilt-edged scrollwork and applied with leaves and flowers, 15.2cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue (minor restoration)

The model is based on the engraving, 'Mounta Banck - Le Charlatan - Il Charlatano', by Pierce Tempest, after Marcellus Laroon the Elder, from the series 'The Cryes of the City of London', which was first published in 1711; see H. Syz et al., Catalogue of the Hans Syz Collection, 1979, no. 294, for other examples of the model. Another example was sold at Bonhams London, 14 December 2016, lot 43.
