A Meissen oval jewellery box and cover, circa 1937-48


Modelled by Paul Scheurich, each end applied with a handle composed of facing dragons heightened in iron-red and gilding, the domed cover surmounted by a finial of two chinoiserie figures of children, a single flower painted on the cover in front, gilt-edged rims, 23cm long; 11cm wide; 13cm high, crossed swords mark with a crescent mark between the handles in underglaze-blue, impressed model number A.1271, former number 59 and 2 (small restoration to foot) (2)

Footnotes

The model was purchased in 1937 and produced in porcelain the same year. It was exhibited at the Hetjens-Museum in Düsseldorf in 1938, when the first example was also sold. A total of 13 painted and 5 white examples were sold by 1952.
