Statuette en grès Böttger représentant un cheval, vers 1937-48

A Meissen Böttger stoneware figure of a rampant horse, circa 1937-48

Modelled standing on its hind quarters, its head turned slightly to the right, its ears pointed to the back of his head, his manes clipped short as for an officer's horse, but its tail long and lusciously falling to the ground, the edge of the base polished, 33.5cm high, 30cm wide, impressed crossed swords with double cancellation mark to the base, impressed 'Böttgersteinzeug' and A.1270 to the base (the left front leg restuck)

Footnotes

This model of a rearing horse is based on an early design by Scheurich for a 1934 commission to design a memorial to the Feldartillerie-Regiment No. 27 "Oranien" in Wiesbaden, for which he created a 3m high bronze rearing horse (Johannes Rafael, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, Meissener Manuskripte, Sonderband VIII, 1995, ill. 62.1). The manufactory had purchased another model for this monument in August 1937, but this was cancelled by the Saxon Economic Ministry and this less-expensive version was purchased instead and produced in Böttger stoneware. By 1945, a total of 16 examples had been sold.

Another example was in the collection of Prof. J. Rafael, sold in these rooms, 14 April 2022, lot 121.
