Très rare et grand buste de femme en grès Böttger, Meissen, circa 1929-1933

A very large and rare Meissen Bust of a Woman (Louise Scheurich) circa 1929-33

Modelled by Paul Scheurich, the surface partially polished, incised signature 'Scheurich' to rear of base, 50.5cm high, incised crossed swords marks with dot between the tips to rear of base, similar mark on inside rim, impressed BOTTGER/ STEINZEUG', incised model number A 1205, incised paste number L 230, incised number 14 perhaps for the former (some minimal flat chips to base)

Footnotes

Several contemporary accounts record that Scheurich's sister, Louise (b. 1886), was the model for this bust, which must have been modelled between 1917 and 1923. It was one of the last models in her husband's studio that Käthe Scheurich sold to the Meissen manufactory to alleviate the financial distress caused by her husband's protracted illness, perhaps because of its personal significance. The model was produced in Böttger stoneware in either 1928 or 1929. Only a single example was sold by 1945.

Another example from the Collection of Prof. J. Rafael was sold in these rooms, 14 April 2022, lot 77.
