A Meissen drinking vessel in the shape of a bear, late 19th century

After the 18th century model by J.J. Kaendler, naturalistically modelled and coloured in shades of grey and brown, wearing a gilt-edged blue collar and holding a banner inscribed in black "Le vin est nécessaire, pour egayer/ la vie/ Il vous donne du courage, de la force/ et de l'esprit.," the circular base edged in gilding, 26.8cm high, crossed swords mark in blue, incised model number 1001, impressed numeral (some restoration) (2)

Footnotes

Drinking vessels in the form of a bear, with the head forming the cover and the body the vessel, were used between the 16th and 18th centuries for the ceremonial welcome of guests (they are also known in German as "Wilkomm" or Welcome beakers). The 18th century model of the present example is probably based upon a silver prototype.

The inscription translates as: "Wine is necessary to enjoy life. It gives you courage, fortitude and spirit."
