Jac Hoogerbrugge (1923-2014), a Dutch transport agent, travelled extensively across Indonesia and New Guinea from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s. His profession allowed him to broaden his knowledge and deepen his passion for the arts and cultures of these regions through the collection of numerous artifacts. In 1956 he was stationed in Hollandia, then the capital of Dutch New Guinea (today Jayapura), a city located between Lake Sentani and Humboldt Bay. A skilled draftsman, Hoogerbrugge sketched and documented many of the objects he collected during his fieldwork, as illustrated by the drawing of the present lot.
From 1969 to 1974, he served as the manager of UNESCO's Asmat Art Project, which aimed to revive the artistic production of the Asmat people.
His fieldwork in these different regions led him, after returning to the Netherlands, to contribute to and author numerous publications on the myths and art of these cultures (Corbey, R., Jac Hoogerbrugge, From Lake Toba to Lake Sentani, 2020, oceanicart.com).
