Susan Vogel, writing about the present lot (op.cit., p.101) states: "The author of this and the previous pot lid [lot 117] is an original artist who obeys the low-horizon convention of this sculpture type in a novel way: he carves his figures as torsos, the legs only implied. By this device he suggests standing or lying down. To the Western observer unfamiliar with the genre, the figures appear to be standing waist deep in grass or water, of course a misinterpretation."
In The Power of Form, W. MacGaffey identifies the proverb as: "Injured hand, rides in a hammock; broken leg, has to make do with a stick."
