Note
Elliott Erwitt was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. Since he was fluent in four languages, he was stationed in Europe, first in Karlsruhe, Germany and then in Orléans, France. He worked as a photographer's assistant, taking identification photos and occasionally shooting portraits for officers. His furloughs allowed him to travel widely in Europe. This image embodies formal aspects and visual themes that Erwitt would continue to explore in the coming decades, particularly his love of capturing animals in motion, as well as his ability to utilize natural lighting for dramatic effect.
