Note
Fellow photographer Ernst Haas noted: "[Erwitt] has a special feeling for the - what they say in German, the kreatur - of those lowly, down-trodden individuals who persist in the face of adversity. To photograph this in humans sometimes degrades them. But Elliott does this with animals in such a way that everybody recognizes human qualities there, and it becomes more delicate." (quoted in The Personal Experience: Elliott Erwitt, p. 37)
