5cm high

Footnotes

Provenance:
Mrs M. Pearman (d. 1999) collection, acquired in Alexandria 1936-1944; and thence by descent.
with ArtAncient Ltd., London.
Private collection, Rotterdam, acquired from the above February 2012.

Amulets depicting Thoth in his baboon form often show the god wearing an udjat-eye pendant on his chest; this is a more unusual example, as the animal grasps the eye in his paws. In this form, Thoth is particularly associated with his role as inventor of writing and scribe of the gods (C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p. 27).
