The model was designed by Albert Carrier-Belleuse in 1880 and named after Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-89), an architect and author of the ornamental directory Nouvelle Iconologie Historiques où Attributs Hiérogliphiques, first published in 1768. This publication, which included designs for vases, furniture, trophies, cartouches, and light fittings, helped popularize the Neo-classical style and the "goût antique" throughout Europe.
Four vases of that form are registered in the Sèvres factory store inventory in January 1896: two were offered to Lucien Fugère, the famed baritone, by the French State, and another offered in 1905 to the King of Portugal as a gift for his visit in France. The fourth example sold at Artcurial Paris, 14 December 2011, lot 45.
A version of this vase with two porcelain figures of women holding the vase at the base was created by Carrier-Belleuse now in the collections of Musée d'Orsay. (inv. GML93521).
Please note that the aforementioned chips to the cover of this vase have been professionally restored and appears well overall.
