Provenance:
Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, acquired in Utrecht 12th March 1977 and in Vinkenveen 6th June 1978.
For a similarly decorated Luristan multi-piece sword, typically set with the blade at a right-angle to the hilt, see O. Muscarella, Bronze and Iron, Ancient Near Eastern Artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1988, p.184, no.303. Both the iron sword in the above lot and the Metropolitan Museum example are decorated on the flat disc pommel with a human head with the forepart of a lion at the top and two couchant lions on the guard. There is also another similar iron multi-part sword in the British Museum, London, dated to 8th-7th Century B.C., acc. no. 1933,1016.7.
