Footnotes

Provenance:
with Fortuna Fine Arts, New York (The Gift of the Gods, 1997, p. 75, no. 117).
Private collection, Switzerland, acquired from the above in 1998.

See a similar intaglio in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, acc. no. AN1892.1442; this ring perhaps also depicts a portrait bust of Faustina II, daughter of Antoninus Pius and wife of Marcus Aurelius, who was deified after her death in 175 A.D..
