Footnotes

Provenance:
Edward Varley Kayley (1900-1974) collection; and thence by descent to the present owner.
Edward Kayley served in WWI and became the Supreme Magnus of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, a post he held until his death in 1974.

For the form, see an example in the British Museum, London, acc. no. 1873,0820.522. Many of the surviving Scylla askoi retain the vivid original polychrome painted decoration which would have covered the entirety of the vessel.
