Footnotes

Provenance:
Constantine Alexander Ionides (1833-1900) collection, London; and thence by descent. Ionides was a British art patron, collector and connoisseur of Greek ancestry, most notable for his bequest of 82 paintings to the V & A Museum. Several of his ancient gems are now at the Getty Museum.
Property of a Gentleman, formerly in the collection of Constantine Alexander Ionides (1833-1900); Christie's, London, 11 June 1997, lot 226.
Private collection, UK, acquired at the above sale.

This shape of pyxis corresponds to Rutherford Robert's 'Type C', which is characterised by a low, broad reel-shape and a wall decorated simply with a wreath or left black (S. Rutherford Roberts, The Attic Pyxis, Chicago, 1978, p. 143). The author notes that 'a closely related type was made contemporaneously in materials other than clay. Luxurious marble examples are known from Brauron', as are parallels in glass and wood.
