A Mae West Costume Sketch for Sextette
Crown International Pictures, 1978. Designed by Edith Head. Gouache and pencil on illustration paper, signed ("Edith Head") on mat, and annotated on sketch in Edith Head's hand, "Mae West / Wedding / white satin / lace / diamonds / white net / very long / train / Boa," with a description plate affixed to bottom of sketch inscribed, "Costume Sketch / For Mae West / by: Edith Head / In the 1950's [sic] for Movie / 'Sextette'" in typescript, matted, and with a previous auction tag labeled "Butterfield & Butterfield [Bonhams] / 3592." Now a campy classic, Sextette was Mae West's attempt to show the world she still had sex appeal, but just in case they didn't fall for that, the cast was as star-studded as they come, with cameos featuring Tony Curtis, Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Keith Moon, and George Raft. James Bond-to-be Timothy Dalton plays the love interest. The film is truly bizarre, with West popping in and out of musical numbers and wisecracking with abandon. One has to give credit to the 84-year-old actress for trying. The wedding gown in the film is slightly different than the sketch, with a different neckline and no boa (but some of these features are used on her negligee in the film).
