A Best Actor Golden Globe Statuette for Kris Kristofferson from A Star is Born
Warner Bros., 1976. Gilt metal globe on marble base, with brass plaque reading "Kris / Kristofferson / Best / Motion Picture / Actor / Musical or Comedy / 'A Star is Born' / 1976" and numbered #7747 at lower left. Base loose on pedestal.
Raspy-voiced singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson exuded an image of gritty masculinity in his musical career, the perfect persona for the role of John Norman Howard in the remake of A Star is Born. In 1937, the first version of the film starred Fredric March as Norman Maine, a down-on-his-luck alcoholic actor whose star is falling as his wife's is rising. For the 1976 remake, the name was changed and the situation was updated: John Norman Howard is now an alcoholic and drug-addicted rock star. Barbra Streisand plays the part of the wife, formerly played by Janet Gaynor. Critics and audiences alike were surprised by Kristofferson's sensitive and honest portrayal of a troubled and broken man, particularly since acting was not his stock-in-trade. That changed, of course, after this film, and he went on to appear in dozens of films and television productions.
