While Walt Disney was enchanting audiences with his fairy tale animated feature films, Fred C. Quimby and Tex Avery created different kinds of cartoons: frenetic, fast-paced features with sarcastic and often violent characters such as Tom and Jerry. Quimby was the film sales executive in charge of the MGM Cartoon Studio, and along with William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and Avery, he created a succession of hilarious short films for which he won several Academy Awards. Avery directed Lucky Ducky (1948), about a spunky little duck who evades a pair of bumbling hunters. The Little Orphan (1948), directed by Hanna and Barbera, features Jerry the mouse and his friend, a little orphan mouse named Nibbles, who team up against Tom the cat to devour Thanksgiving dinner. The Little Quacker (1950), also directed by Hanna and Barbera and also starring Tom and Jerry, features Jerry protecting a little duck from becoming Tom's dinner.
