A Prop Shield from Cleopatra and Other Productions
MGM, 1960. A painted fiberglass Roman-style shield, 41 x 22 x 4 in., lacking original straps.
Elizabeth Taylor, as the Queen of the Nile, was well protected by the Roman army under Caesar with this prop shield used in Cleopatra, an epic production directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz starring Taylor with Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, and Roddy McDowall. The production was a chaotic process which was vastly over budget and adversely affected by the love affair between its married (to others) stars, Taylor and Burton. The prop shield is prominently shown in the army scenes and was also used in the films, She (1965), History of the World: Part 1 (1981), and likely others.
Provenance: Julien's Live, "Icons & Idols: Hollywood 2015," December 16, 2015, lot 554.
