A Group of Costume Sketches from Ben-Hur featuring Stephen Boyd, Designed by Elizabeth Haffenden, Sketched by Paula Giokaris
MGM, 1959. A trio of costume sketches done in gouache and pencil featuring two of actor Stephen Boyd, who played Messala in the film: the first features him in a white robe which may have been cut from the scene where he is receiving a massage. The second is a prototype in pencil of Messala in armor. The third sketch is a female character/townsperson. As the winner of 11 Academy Awards, Ben-Hur is one of director William Wyler's masterpieces. Though it wasn't the first version of the story ever filmed, it is definitely the most beloved. Charlton Heston stars as Judah Ben-Hur, and in his performance, he created yet another identifiable role. Co-star Stephen Boyd is his worthy opponent, Messala, and together they performed in the famous and still-exciting chariot scene which is just one of the many reasons this epic has staying power.
