A Title Continuity Screenplay for Tarzan, the Ape Man
MGM, 1932. Mimeographed Manuscript titled "Tarzan, the Ape Man instructions for superimposing titles," 37 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, April 7, 1932, bound with brads in tan wrappers with MGM label to upper cover stamped "file copy," cover edges chipped and browned, interior lightly toned. WITH: photocopy of 1933 coverage of the film.
Page 1 of this manuscript indicates that this is the title continuity for a "Special Foreign Edition" of the film: "The following is a complete list of the titles superimposed onto the American sound version for "TARZAN THE APE MAN," prod. 595." Olympic athlete Johnny Weissmuller became the focus of producer Irving Thalberg when he signed a contract with the most prestigious studio in Hollywood, MGM, to play the coveted part of Tarzan opposite actress Maureen O'Sullivan. He became so synonymous with the role that his Olympic career was virtually overlooked. Based on the adventure novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan the Ape Man is the first of the series with Weissmuller, whose sheer physicality made his entrance in the film strikingly beautiful. Director "One Take Woody" Van Dyke was an MGM favorite as much for his genius as his directorial efficiency. The film was a massive success leading to several more in the series with Weissmuller and Sullivan.
