Footnotes

Charles Burrell & Sons of Thetford, Norfolk were the main suppliers of steam road locomotives to the travelling showmen and are largely viewed as the makers of the greatest steam traction engines on the market. They built a total of 43 Scenic road locomotives to power the new Scenic Rides in the early 20th century. These engines generated electricity for the Electric Scenic Railway Rides and became known as the 'Scenic engines'. The present lot is a 1:3 scale engine made after one such engine called Dolphin built in 1925 (number 4030) which still survives in preservation.

This showman's road locomotive would be placed in regional hotels prior to the funfair coming to town in order to build excitement and act as an advertisement for the fair and its touring dates.

The present lot has been previously been run on compressed air.
