With a distinct love for depicting the people, places and activities which make up everyday life in Iraq, Faisal Laibi Sahi's unique stylised realism, rendered in vivid detail and colour, makes him an instantly recognisable artist. In Baghdad Barber, Laibi Sahi allows the subjects in the foreground to be the focus of the work, in contrast to a plain, muted background. He also uses the smallest details to evoke local culture, such as the newspaper on the floor, the turquoise stone ring on the wedding finger of the barber, the silver tools and the style of dress. It is in these subtleties that Laibi Sahi successfully creates a quintessentially Iraqi artwork, with details that resonate with Iraqis and other Arabs. As seen here, the artist often paints his subjects in a style reminiscent of miniature paintings, with a surreal, distorted perspective for the floor, walls, ceiling and the positioning of the characters, a technique which other artists (such as Jewad Selim) also borrowed from the artistic legacy of Arab manuscripts.
