In 2004, Richard Mille launched its first automatic model, the RM 005, featuring a semi-instantaneous date-change. One of the major challenges with the RM 005 was the creation of the titanium baseplate. The independent watchmaker had to invest in and research the appropriate tools to manufacture this challenging part. The difficulty lay not only in designing these baseplates but also in the production methods. Watchmakers had to be meticulous to avoid marking the PVD treatment during movement assembly. This process was highly challenging with a significant rejection rate, but Richard Mille was determined that the quality of his watches would be consistent with his perfectionist ethos. The RM005 also introduced the exclusive variable-geometry rotor, a groundbreaking invention that allows the winding mechanism to be optimized and tailored to the owner's lifestyle by adjusting the six-position rib placement setting. This patented mechanism alters the rotor's inertia, either accelerating the winding process with minimal arm and hand movements or decelerating it during high-activity sports. The current lot, in excellent condition, has also been recently serviced, so it is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner for years to come.
