Audemars Piguet combined two of their most prized features, the Royal Oak and the perpetual calendar, by launching the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in 1984, reference 5554, driven by the calibre 2120/2800. This innovation marked a significant milestone for the model. In 1998, they further enhanced the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar with the reference 25820 series, which introduced the calibre 2120/2802 and added a leap year indicator. Produced from 1996 to 2013, this famed reference was available in various precious metals and dial colors, with a total of 1235 pieces made. The current lot is one of 378 pieces in stainless steel and platinum and has become highly prized by collectors over the years. The two-tone case paired with a deep black grande tapisserie dial is considered one of the most appealing variants, and the polished platinum bezel truly stands out when compared to the typical finishing of the standard Royal Oak models. The shiny silver registers contrast beautifully with the mirror-polished platinum bezel, thus adding to the luxurious effect on the wrist. Maintaining the same diameter as the original Royal Oak, these early perpetual calendars are extremely rare and highly sought after in today's market, and considering the excellent condition of the current example, is one that many will be hoping to add to their collections.
